  • 4-Place Rudder Horn Engineering Change - How to implement?

    Hi all,
In July 2003, an OPTIONAL engineering change modified the length of the 4-place rudder horn from 3-1/4" "center to hole" distance to 2-1/4": http://bearhawksafety.com/4-place/changejul03.html
In October 2007, a subsequent engineering change was released to change the design back to the original 3-1/4" "center to hole" distance: http://bearhawksafety.com/4-place/changeoct07.html

The stated reason for the 2007 change back to the original 3-1/4" value were to improve ground steering and reduce stress on the rudder pedal assembly.

As luck would have it, my QB kit was built in 2006 with the 2-1/4" horn.

I've convinced myself (perhaps wrongly) that I should follow the 2007 change and go with the 3-1/4" measurement.

It seems I could make up a flat adapter plate with .090 4130 stock, weld .090 washers in place accordance with the current drawings, and bolt it up to the existing rudder horn. I feel more confident in my ability to pull that off vs. doing surgery to the rudder to cut off the old horn and replace it. Here is CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) of what I have in mind:

Any comments or feedback would be welcome!

    That is a viable method.
I would fold down a 3/8 flange on the back end of your new piece and add 2 additional -3 bolts approx where the spring clamps are located.
