  • Rules like this make me wonder if I'll ever fly the plane I'm building...

During a hastily organized webinar held Dec. 12, the FAA said it will move forward with implementing its new sleep apnea policy despite overwhelming opposition.

Makes me think about ditching the patrol and going with the LSA...

    But then a week later...

Federal Air Surgeon Fred Tilton contacted AOPA Dec. 19 to announce that the FAA will not move ahead with implementing its new sleep apnea policy in January. Instead, in the new year, the agency will open discussions with aviation industry stakeholders to find a way to balance pilots’ and the FAA’s concerns.

I can understand your concern. I have wanted to build an airplane previous to earning my pilots license before graduating high school some 30+ years ago with aspirations of a pilot career. Having first seen the Bearhawk at OSH in 2009, I finally found the plane I wanted after having plans for a Breezy since the eighties. A Breezy would be fun but not too practical. The BD-4 was interesting but not what I really had in mind.

After returning home from OSH and researching the net about a Bearhawk I immediately ordered the plans and was finally set to go. Not long afterwards I had a medical situation and have a special issuance for the past three years. So here I am with the Avipro rib and spar package, builder's manuals, reference CD, the material to make the wing steel and a medical that is rather cumbersome and costly to obtain. I like working with my hands and could build just for the experience but that is not me. I am not going to build a plane only to give it up for someone else or ride in it depending upon someone's schedule.

The decision to continue has been a roller coaster and I have finally come up with a plan after seeing this:

The General Aviation Pilot Protection Act would allow pilots to use the driver’s license medical standard for noncommercial VFR flights.

I will wait until the end of the new year to see what happens with the third class medical before selling the parts and move on with life. Probably build a boat since I live very near Lake Michigan. That is something I can enjoy regardless. It may be time to bow out gracefully after much thought and emotionally draining debate.
