  • flight hour #12

After two weeks of bad WX we finally got the chance to fly today. WooHoo I love this plane. I swear to you it’s like rocket on take off.

On my last flight my Dynon back up battery was loosing power and so was the Odessy, due to a bad alternator. The P-mags were the concern because with a dead Odessy, they will not power themselves below 900 RPM and If you lose your Dynon screen, you don’t know what your RPM is. Also I had not tested the ground idle, vs the in flight idle. That test is done now and as advertised the P-mags quit working at 890 RPM on the ground and my in flight idle is 1080—good to know for any future battery failures.

On this flight we had intended on comparing our airspeeds and checking out the newly 3 inch extended flap handle. Couldn’t do the airspeed test because Dennis’ had a problem with the radio where it would not work at all sometimes. Called Dynon and the question to us was if we had the mods A & B, neither of them did so both of us are without radios at the moment.

The flap has been a huge problem for me—I can’t get the 3rd notch out there. I have done several things to remedy this and it appears to have worked. I used them every landing today and did several slow flight test and they worked fine for me.

    1) Extended the flap handle as much as we could-3 in.

    2) Put my seat back a bit to give me more arm leverage.

    3) Looked over the system closely and found the lower left cable guard pushing on the cable under tension—and fixed it.

    4) The hardest thing to do—for the last two weeks I have been walking around with 6 lbs of ankle weights strapped to my left arm, using a spring loaded hand grip and while watching TV at night, doing arm lefts and curls. Combined, i’m sure, all of the above has worked. Getting the flaps out at 65 indicated with no problems and this will only get better, as I get stronger. Now if the WX would stay just like it is!! D.

Ah, the joy and the Gremlins! I can't wait to begin my own thread about the trials and tribulations of the 40 hr phase 1. I've been battling Gremlins and winning (generally). I think I solved my last issue today, but won't be sure till next week, when the stuff arrives.
I can't tell you how great it is, to hear of your pleasure- flying your plane!
Personally, I prefer the 12 oz curls...

Please, don't be jealous!!! Be MOTIVATED!! Knowing what I know now, I'm really excited to hear about 1st and consecutive flights from all you guys in the final stages of building. It seems so close, yet so far. Before you know it, you'll be checking the WX to see if it's the day. It's crazy how it seems there is so much left to do, but all of a sudden your done and chasing gremlins from the shake down flights--may they be few!! For everybody just starting, it is so worth it. My best advice, as I've said before is to get as much quick build as you can, life is short and flying is fun!!! (Especially if your flying the Patrol.) D.
