  • Garmin G3X Installation Course

Was able to attend this 3 day class in Lees Summit, MO outside of Kansas City. Timing was great as it was Weds to Fri the week before Oshkosh, so I flew to KC and then on to Oshkosh. It is hosted by the Aircraft Electronics Association which is the trade group for the Avionics industry. I read about this course in Kitplanes awhile ago. If you are going to install a G3X system I recommend this class. The instructor Pahon, is excellent, he owns a couple large Avionics shops in Florida, has installed the system in his own RV7 and Lancair IV. The class is limited to 12 students, each has their own large desk and toolbox with everything needed to make a wiring harness. After a day of lecture you are given wiring diagrams and dimensions to build a wiring harness with several connectors. The instructors make sure you are using the crimpers correctly and evaluate your soldering technique. I could probably have completed the installation without the class, but learned several valuable tips on making professional wiring harnesses. Also discussion on equipment selection to meet your flying needs was valuable. Most important take away was the need for service loops at each connector for maintenance. Pahon emphasized that you have to get the power and ground wires correct the first time or you will fry the equipment. Anything else if miss pinned will become evident when doing checkouts and can be corrected. Normally this course is proceeded by a 2 day course, Basic Aircraft Electrical taught by the same instructor. The next class is in late October. https://www.aea.net/Training/
