  • LSA with Electrical system under 820lb Empty?

My goal is to build an LSA (including an electrical system/starter) with useful of 500lb or greater. From watching/reading the information on the BH LSA, I believe this is doable. I've read that adding electrics and starter to the C-85-12 will add between 45-60 lb. So, Bob's comment that builders can keep the aircraft at 750+ adhering to building light principles and adding the 45-60 for the electrical system - looks doable.

    Thoughts...

    Wants:
    1. Minimal VFR panel
    2. Transponder
    3. Starter if I an stay below 820 empty.
    4. GPS and Com will be portables.

Some of the options/items that make the BH LSA a leader on my list:
    1. Plans only option.
    2. STOL aircraft. Want the option to keep the aircraft in my backyard in the future.
    3. Decent cruise speed north of 100 mph for those short cross-country trips.
    4. Low stall speed.
    5. Simple design. Impressed with the 30mph stall without the need for flaps.
    6. All metal wing. Not a fan of fabric wings.
    7. I want at least 500lb useful. From what I’ve read, I should be able to keep the BH LSA below 820 lb empty even with an O-200 with starter/electrical system.
    8. Prefer a tri-gear, however would rather have a tandem if limited to tail dragger configuration.

Check the general discussion part of the forum. There's a discussion there about what an electrical system weighs. Consensus seems to be that you can have a basic system, starter, alternator, lithium battery for around 35 lbs or less. Going with electronic gauges and ignition gives further weight savings. And the newer panel mount comm radios don't weigh any more than a hand held.

I selected the Patrol for most of the same reasons you list, probably would have gone with the LSA if it had been available then.
