Question on Plans Page 13

I am looking for the materials called for on Plans Page 13. It looks to me like the only the Lug for the Hinge Mounts calls for 1020 Steel. Am I reading the plans wrong? Is everything on p13 made of 1020 steel?

I believe you have read the plans correctly. The material for the page is listed as 4130N with the lugs being the exception. Also the other items on the page are given material thickness that would be difficult to find in standard 1020. The low 1000 steels are utility grade and usually are sold by gage thickness or fractional sizes.

I could never find such material. I asked Bob. I believe he is ok with using 1018 cold rolled steel. I use www.onlinemetals.com


There are a few locations where a substitution might be better. For example on the tail profiled ribs he calls out 1018 032 -- some where in my notes I wrote down that I could use 4130n 025

While I am thinking about it -- I caution you that the jig he has in his manual has the wrong dimensions for welding up the hinges out of 4130. I think he must have copied some of the numbers from the bearhawk 4 place.

I have plans p284 if he ever changed it it would be some time later in the series.

Clarify for me that "The manual" means the hard copy of the Patrol Book that I recieved from Bob when I got my Patrol Plans.

Did you decide on the 1018 as your final choice? I was looking at Big Blue Saw as a resource to cut out those lugs for me, and I saw that they have 1018 on their materials list, as well as 1008.

Resurrecting an old thread. What is the latest? Is everyone using 1018? How about 4130?

I don't think you are missing anything, Mark, but I ended up aborting the scratch build and going with a kit before having to commit.

Practically speaking though, I don't think it makes much difference what steel is chosen as long as its compatible with the 4130 tubing. The lug is 1/4" thick while the hinge tubing is .049., Its literally has tons of strength no matter what steel is chosen compared to the hinge tubing. I believe 1/4" steel was called out for the lug so that it matches the width of the Control Surface Bearing that fits inside of it.
