Considering a Bearhawk 5 Build in Brazil

Hello everyone,

My name is Paulo and I’m from Brazil.

I’m a pilot and I’m seriously considering starting a Bearhawk 5 project. I have access to an experienced aircraft builder here in Brazil and I’m currently evaluating a plans-built approach, possibly combined with some kit components.

My main interests are:
- utility/backcountry capability
- good payload
- cross-country performance
- operation from shorter and rough airstrips

I’m also researching engine options, especially the traditional IO-540 versus Jet-A/diesel alternatives such as SMA or Continental diesel engines.

I would really appreciate any advice from current Bearhawk 5 builders regarding:
- plans-built experience
- recommended kits/components to buy instead of fabricating
- realistic build times
- engine recommendations
- operating costs
- common mistakes to avoid

I contacted continental about purchasing one of their larger diesel engines like is used on some of the diamond aircraft and was quickly informed that unless I work for Cessna or diamond to not try to buy one cause they are unavailable to anyone except for the manufacturers. Not sure what that means for when people need overhauls. I guess they have to go back to the factory for an overhaul. Delta hawk has a 300hp six cylinder diesel supposed to be released later this year that is coming out on the new bushliners and should’ve available for the experimental market if it follows like their other engines
