  • Lurking from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

    Hi everyone,

My name is Morgan Wadsworth and I'm from the frigid city of Regina, Saskatchewan. Usual story...love airplanes, love building things so the two go together. I have looked at every website, bought thousands of dollars worth of magazines (ok maybe hundreds of dollars) and have chatted with a lot of people. I've been thinking about building an airplane for so long that I've gone through a variety of major life events...moved out of parents house when I was 18 (I wanted a Mustang II), Got a career when I was 22 (I wanted a Sea Wind), Got Married at 30 (I wanted Velocity RG), Have two young kids ( I want a Bearhawk).

I spend a lot of time outdoors (kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, etc.), so realistically I want a plane that can get me across Canada (into the U.S) and haul some gear and some people at a decent speed. The Bearhawk fits that mission.

My wife resigned from a teaching position to stay at home with our children and now that our youngest son will be off to school next year my wife is looking to start her career again. Which I'm hoping translates to being able to purchase a kit soon. I'm very much leaning towards a Quick Build kit. I love building, but would rather get to flying sooner.

I'm a student pilot that hasn't flown for a while and would be ok building a kit and training in a 4 place airplane as my project nears completion so that I could transition in to training into my future Bearhawk when the time comes. A local guy did that exact thing while building a Glastar Sportsman and he said it was great to be finishing up an airplane and learning to fly that airplane.

Really looking forward to participating here (mostly listening for a while) so that I can gain some insight in to things like how to start, tools to have and i'm hoping a lot of "what not to do" information.

    Cheers

    Howdy Morgan,
Hey I've been there! We were driving through from MN to MT via Canada and camped there in a city park. It was pitch black when we pitched the tent and we were unaware of the tracks just 50 feet away behind a row of trees. Every 2 hours it sounded like that train was coming straight at us, man it was loud. There was no motel room available because you guys were having some ranching convention. This was back in the late 90s. To this day, I'm still not sure how you pronounce Regina, but I'm sure you're sick of the jokes by now.

Love the evolution of your wishlist! I settled on the Patrol because of the ruggedness, design and sub kits. I'm thinking of getting my glider rating during this project. I'm not sure what the international rules are but Jared Yates may chime in here regarding his LODA to train in his 4-place. If it worked out that would be perfect for you!

      Hi Mark,

I'm not sure which campground that would be but I'm not surprised it was near some railroad tracks! I hope you got some sleep. LOL

I'll have to to do some digging around. I do know that the Sportsman was an easy transition from the Cessna 172 or 182 that they guy did his training in. In the end the guy built an RV-10 as well...he uses it to fly down to Florida and then across to the Bahama's. Last I heard he really loves the RV-10, great cruise speed and range.

Mark...do you have a website or blog about your building project? I'd love to see how its coming along.

      Cheers,

Only other contender I seriously considered was a kitfox because they have factory-blessed training just down the road. But as with any kit, I can't afford all that cash up front.
I have a link to my photo album on my profile, not much there but it's a start!
