      The spring rate is about 50% of the round steel section. I would estimate the ultimate strength is about 20% less. I calculated the weakest part of the straight round taper is about 3 inches out from the socket. On the flat taper, the maximum stress is the same for the entire length. Hopefully the softer spring rate will more than offset the reduced strength. It will reduce airframe load. The design is based on the gear I designed for the RANS S-7 for backcountry use. There are about 60 planes using that gear and no failures that I know of.
