Struck upon an accurate and easy way to see where the timing marks are relative to the crankcase split on small Continental engines if you have the nose bowl off.
Set up a small laser level with the "line" lens on it in a vise on the floor and line it up along the case split so it also shines onto the crank flange.
Much easier and more accurate then trying to "eyeball" it with a metal rule,
