  • Rivet hole tolerance

Where can I find out the tolerances on elongated rivet holes? I have some on my 118" capstrip and I can find plenty of references to upsizing rivets, but no specifics on what the tolerances are. Also, how does one measure the tolerances on a rivet hole?

Table 1 on this document lists some tolerance info. http://www.engineersedge.com/rivet_application.htm

Thank you for that. That leads me to the next question. I have 12 holes on my 118" capstrip that fall outside of the tolerances in that table. Has anybody else had this issue, and is it ok to upsize to #6 rivets for those holes?

PS: I do have more than 2 adjacent oversize holes. From the definition in that document I am guessing I'm out of luck?

well that's a mil-spec document and I am sure pretty conservative. You've got the spacing and edge distant required for #6 rivets, so I would think it's OK. If it were me....I'd call Bob and describe the issue and see what he has to say.

I'm a US Army Aircraft Structure Repairer (MOS 15G) and I'm attaching a copy of the US Army's Technical Manual for Sheet Metal Practices, TM 1-1500-204-23-10 (aka the "dash 10") here. It's the "Bible" we use for fabrication and repairs. Chapter 7 covers riveting.
It's a pdf file, so you can download and save it, print the pages you want, etc. Hope it helps.

Bradrock, did you ever get your hole issues resolved?
              Thanks

                Hi Gerry
I am going to replace that capstrip. There were too many holes that were well out of whack. I may be able to get away with it but it would always play on my mind. I'd rather know that it was perfect and sacrifice the dollars and time to rebuild the capstrip.
