I had a reason to learn how to check the mag timing using the "flower pot" method. I wasn't comfortable with drag of the indicator on the flower pot and the inconsistent readings that came with how I "flicked" the indicator. This was because of the tilt caused by a tailwheel with medium sized tires.
So I came up with a 21st century Amazon version.
Improved mag timing flower pot.JPG
This is a knock off of a commercial version that I was looking at but hasn't been available to order, that I can find.
Parts:
Woodworkers saw level
Paint mixing cup
Scrap steel for magnetic base of level
1/4" surgical tubing
cord locks for the tubing
a couple of trimmed nylon cable clamps
Mag timing is set pretty close. You can waste a lot of time trying to time within a tenth of a degree, which is overkill I'm told.
One use might be a quick timing check for troubleshooting without having to remove the cowling to see timing marks.
Hope helpful.
