  • New Hero 3+ testing

Santa left a new Hero 3+ in my stocking. Managed a few minutes to test it late this afternoon. :-)

Very cool. How did you get rid of the funky prop? I hate it when the prop ruins an otherwise great video.

The prop is removed by having a longer exposure. That causes the prop to blur. In this case the longer exposure is just a side effect of the low light conditions. I still need to get a "neutral density filter" to get the same effect in brighter light. A longer exposure can also prevent a wavy appearance caused by vibration.

3+ black. The black came with the remote, has higher resolution, and more cool modes including superview mode. -- Bearhawk

Great quality. I have been looking at the GoPro cameras - they have Silver, White and Black. In watching your video it looks like the Black is a good way to go. Thanks,

OK. That's weird. Now I don't see the video link using a web browser from non-mobile device either?! I guess that others are seeing it?

Nope - it went away. The video about the filter is still there though. Maybe YouTube took your down?

Seems to still be there. I think that the forum is somehow inconsistent/unreliable about including the link in the post.

I also have the problem that seems to be related to cache/cookies on chrome. I have to use "incognito mode" to properly login.

Incidentally, the quality of the original footage is much better than what I posted. After cutting about half the footage out, it was re-encoded at a different frame rate and with settings for "YouTube". You're not seeing all that the 3+ Black can do.

On the cheap, you can just tape an old sunglass lens over the GoPro lens. We shot the linked video last summer. The "tower drops" (same as the "cover photo") are done with three sunglass lenses taped on. Not optically pure, I guess, but it was a neat effect nonetheless. We were playing around, but I'm sure you could find one dark lens that did the trick.

You can also post higher quality video on Vimeo.
