Anyone got a photo of the new caps? I'm in the middle of the wings and need to assess what changes if any I need to make to accommodate the new fuel caps
Thanks
Thanks
I didn't get a photo, but I did see them (and order them) when I was in Fairfield a couple of weeks ago.
This is what I remember from my discussion. I could very well have some of these details wrong. I do have a great memory, it is just very short:
The vent is now part of the flange and not the cap. It sticks up about 3/4" or so, and the opening is much larger than on the original fuel caps.
They have 3D printed jigs to help with the drilling. The jig fits into the fuel neck and you drill through the skin. There is a small bump out where the vent goes as well.
If you have aux tanks, the jig needs to be rotated away from the side of the tank. The filler is much closer to the edge on aux tanks.
After that, you have to drill the tank. They mentioned that it is much easier to do with the tank removed.
After the holes are drilled, the installation looks pretty straight forward.
It is much more robust looking fuel cap and vent.
At the Tuesday dinner Peter said that the new caps require removing the tanks from the wings and a couple of hours of work. I'm not sure if that was two things or one thing. It takes me a couple of hours to drain and remove the tanks. It would seem smart to postpone tank work if you want to use the new caps.
My understanding is RV's have an internal vent that terminates at the inboard edge of the tank, but runs internally to the outboard end.
On a retrofit installation the “C” clip that is the backing plate is threaded. The filler neck screws to this clip, sandwiching the tank and gasket between the two.
I see....the C clip is mounted inside the tank?
I copied Nev and got slightly smaller o-rings, mine have been perfectly fine since as well. Three years going. They WERE a total pain before that mod though. These new fuel caps look great. Nice work, guys.
For anyone with an existing aircraft, I modified my original fuel caps about four years ago using Graham Johnson’s roll-pin method. It’s a relatively straightforward modification that completely solved the issue for me.
After four years and 400 hours of flying with the modified caps, I’ve had no problems at all. I mention it simply for the benefit of anyone considering updating the caps on an already flying aircraft. Graham’s approach is simple, proven, and worked very well in my experience.
If I were building a new aircraft today, though, I’d definitely fit the new fuel caps.

How to mod
Barry, I have the original fuel caps that came with my C11 kit. Send me your address so that I can calculate postage. If anyone has installed the new style caps, I would like to purchase a couple of the old ones for my LSA as spares.
