    Companion Progress Thus far

My finished panel arrived today: I created the layout and had Steve Schurwald at Aircraft Specialty Flightlines (www.asflightlines.com) fabricate it out of .090 6061-T6, powder coat and screen print it.

Tell us what you did today on your Bearhawk Project

Got started on rib stitching the horizontal stabs. I'm using the staggerwing stitch and pretty happy with how my first attempts at how this turned out.

    Rib Stitch Trim Tab?

I've covered both trim tabs and am wondering if the little brace needs to be rib stitched. It's not a rib per se and with the thinness of the brace, I wonder if it would even be harmful to attempt it. I plan to put a piece of tape over it for reinforcement in any case. Thoughts?

    Tail Inspection Port Size

In re accessing the stinger bolt head, this must be a difference between the full size BH and the Companion because mine is outside the covering

    Tail Inspection Port Size

I'm finishing up the inspection ports in the fuselage and scratching my head on the size and shape to make the access ports for the elevator control horns. It appears that most use a rectangular opening and some use a round opening. I'm ok with either shape, but wonder about the size to make it...

    Cheap Firewall Passthroughs

If you need a stainless firewall passthrough for all your wires, consider stainless closet rod holders. 2 for $7.00 off of Amazon plus free shipping. Add fire sleeve and a couple of pipe clamps you might have lying around (I do) and you have saved enough for a nice dinner since Spruce sells...

    Stupid Fabric Covering Questions

Everything I know (and that ain't much) about fabric covering I've gotten from watching the Stewart Systems videos. I plan to use SS and am interested in the concept of double covering using two layers of the Superflite 104 fabric. My confusion comes from the idea that the second layer is the...

    Companion Progress Thus far

I guess someone needs to update progress on their Companion project. I received my QB on June 12 and as of today, I have installed the stringers, floor boards, tail, control cables, pitch servo, trim servo, firewall, control sticks, pedals, fuel line, and electric fuel pump. Landing gear, and...

    Baggage Bulkhead Idea

I found some polycarbonate roof panel material at McMaster-Carr (see https://www.mcmaster.com/85795K227/). I'm thinking this might be good material for my baggage bulkhead. 1/16" thick so I'm thinking it can't be that heavy and with the corrugations, I'm thinking it's pretty strong. I'm still...

    Autopilot Choices and Results

I definitely want an autopilot for my Companion. Who's using what and are you satisfied with its performance. Since I have the Dynon Skyview suite in my RV-8, I was planning to do the same thing in the Bearhawk, but wanted to hear from those who have been there and done that. What do you have...

Tell us what you did today on your Bearhawk Project

Well, I finally have something to report...actually receiving my Companion kit today! Took the wings to the airport and put them in my hangar and kept the fuse at home. So the journey begins...

    Things to Buy

While I wait for my Companion kit to arrive (sometime after the first week in June), I am attempting to make sure that I have all of the "stuff" I need to get this party started. I've got the hardware package from Wicks so that's a start. Tools aren't an issue, but I am wondering about other...

    Cable Tools

Fortunately, I own most of all the tools needed for my Companion project, but I don't own a swaging or cable tension measuring tool. I want the right tool for the job (no interest in cutting all my cables out like robcaldwell had to do), so I want the Nicopress swager (part 64-CGMP according to...

    Rotisserie Pivot Height

So, job one for my Companion project will be fabricating my rotisserie. I will be fabricating both ends of the rotisserie from surplus 2" x 2" 16ga steel tube I have in my workshop so I can make it the way I want. Not having the kit in house yet, I wonder what height both ends of the rotisserie...

    New Member in West Tn

Hi All, My name is Mark Dickens. I live in Collierville, TN and I am looking seriously at doing a Companion project. I've built an RV-8 (standard kit) so I wouldn't be starting from nothing (tools or knowledge wise). The RV-8 is as done as I can get it and I love flying it, but I also love...
