    Happy New Year

Here's hoping you and your family have good health and you make big strides forward in your scratch builds. This is the year I finish my Patrol empennage, wings and get a good start on the fuselage. A lot to look forward to. Cheers Gerry

    Rudder construction

I thought the rudder construction would be a breeze. But the T.E. tube is kicking my butt. I spent almost 4 hours just getting the lower bend in. The tube is easy to bend but the shape is challenging. Perfect project for a rainy day. Gerry Patrol #30

    My new $75.00 airplane

Dragged this little cutie home today. My wife was PISSED. Bought it for the tubing so I can sharpen my welding skills. It's a Piper Colt, they same type I flew on my first solo so many years ago. My neighbor started cutting it up and was surprised to find the interior of the tubes to be free of...

    Flaps and ailerons

Nothing prettier then newly alodyned aluminum detail parts. Weather is getting cooler, got to get a wiggle on to finish all the primer work so I can assemble this winter. Cheers Gerry Patrol #30

    Airbrushing epoxy primer

I bought a new airbrush based on the advice of a professional artist in my model airplane club. It's called the Neoeco NCT-SJ83. I have had a chance to put it through it's paces and it's a great airbrush. It comes with. 3 needles and nozzles and I used the largest to spray Stits EP430 epoxy...

    Some progress

Not much action on Patrol scratchbuilt forum these days. So here's some of what I have been doing. It took me 6 tries to get a good horizontal stab rid #5. With each failure I dialed it in a little. The rib on the left was a winner, now I have the correct measurements to make the second and...

    Top coating primer

I'm using Stits EP 420 epoxy primer. My biplane friends insist I need to use a topcoat over the epoxy primer on my steel parts. I have had good luck over the years with just a coat of primer over properly prepared steel. Do I really need the protection of a top coat on steel? PPG Concept LV...

    Aileron/Flap hinge installation

Curious about when others have installed their wing side control surface hinge fittings. I would like to do it before loading the rear spars into the assembly jig. Cannot find a reason to not do it. I have no adjustment available in waterline on the wing side because the fittings must bolt...

    For what it's worth

I have been having trouble bending the most outbd horizontal stab ribs. Unlike the other stab ribs, these ribs have straight edges and go from 7/8" aft to 1/2" fwd at the squashed leading edge tube. The flanges are 9/16" and I have not been able to get an acceptable part using a conventional...

    Getting back to it

Took most of a year off due to cancer treatment. Finally getting back in the shop, trying to figure out where I left off. Now cured, thank goodness for modern medicine, it's like being brand new. Kiss your kids and celebrate your good health. Gerry Patrol #30

    Upper longerons

Anybody know where the longeron splice goes on the upper fuselage longerons. I cannot see a callout on the print. I'm planning on putting the splice between Station M and L unless someone has a better location. Curious where the QB longeron splice is. Thx Gerry Patrol #30

    Horizontal stab

I need some pictures of the Rib 5 (most outboard) intersection at the leading edge and the mail spar. The leading edge tube needs a little heating and shaping. Want to make sure I'm on the right path. The more pictures the better. Thanks in advance Gerry Patrol #30

    Aileron nose ribs

Has the profile of the above changed over the years? I'm sure I read that a change was made however I can find nothing in the engineering change notices, nothing mentioned in the Patrol plans built list, all seven pages, nothing. A general search of all lists showed nothing. Am assembling my...

    Hello, anybody home?

Finally, primer time in the great NW. I love this time of year. 15% humidity, plus I get a chance to change the color of tbe neigbbors Tessla just a little. "Rodney, does our car look just a taste green?" Aileron and flap will wrap up the AL parts on this project. Love spraying outside. Airbrush...

    AFC-50 treatment

Well the weather has changed here in the NW so time to spray some primer outside. The only AL items I have to prime are the ailerons and flaps. When I owned an all metal certified airplane, I had it treated with AFC-50 corrosion treatment. Has anyone tried that with fabric covered ailerons and...

    Tube bending

I have a new appreciation for the toughness of4130 cond N tubing. I have just about dislocated both shoulders getting the first empennage tube bent. 1/2"×.049 almost did me in, but Success. Only 7 more to go. Gerry Patrol #30
