  • Riveting the Spars on Edge

There was conversation on drilling capstrips. I thought this may be of interest for riveting the spars & especially if working alone. The spars were assembled on a horizontal ladder hanging over the edge of the table. String lines were used to get the ladder flat and plywood strips used to make a flat straight row of edges on the horizontal ladder rather than fight the bigger wood rungs. Once the spar assemblies were ready to rivet then we built a vertical ladder off the horizontal ladder. Set the end verticals and use 2 stringlines to align the verticals in between then clamp the spars to the vertical ladder. The masking tape squares were used to keep the rivets from rattling out while driving neighbouring rivets. This vertical position allows a more comfortable work arrangement for bucking the heavy rivets. It also makes it easy to work together to jump around and rivet the spar as it is easy to observe the work on both sides. If there is no one to hold the bucking bar then this work arrangement could support working alone.
