  • Spar bend radius

I asked a question regarding bend radius on the spars a while back. I am aware of the plans calling for a 0.10 radius. I am building a brake that has a piece of MDF to create the radius. I had planned on using a 1/8" roundover bit on the router to form the MDF for the bending brake. This is very slightly larger than 0.10. It seems miniscule to me, but can anyone foresee any clearance issues when assembling the spars with a slightly larger radius?

Hi Brad, I used a 3/16" thick piece of angle iron for the hold down bar on my brake and the bend radius came out to be about twice what the plans call for. I haven't seen any place yet that I have been burned by that. One thing is that your cap strips would be slightly towards the center but I wouldn't think that the plane would know the difference and I am sure that the plane will not just fall out of the sky because of it. All of the wing attach fittings, spacers, and spar splices are hand fit anyway...it would just be a matter of a couple extra strokes of a file. I may be wrong, but I am betting my life on the decision. I used a bend radius about twice what the plans called for with my ribs and they turned out great with no cracking. Make sure your spars fit your ribs, it will make your life a whole lot easier.
