  • Wing skin overlap

    Guys, got my first skin down (yay) and now it's time to fit the next one. The builders guide says that you fit the second skin, then put the first skin back in place. Then you move the rib at the overlap out of the way and match drill the very top and bottom holes (on the nose rib), then you draw a line In between and drill the remaining holes and finish fitting the skin.
    Here is my question (finally!), as my skin is TIGHT around the nose rib, how do you get the second skin between the nose rib tip and the first skin? My second question is, is the outboard skin always on top at the overlaps? It seems like it would be better if each skin moving inboard from the tip was over the one before it, if I'm making sense?

    Anyway...my first skin is down!

    Dave,

    I replied to your other post you made asking for skinning tips regarding the overlap. It is perfectly fine to overlap the inboard panel on top of the outboard panel. That is the way I did mine. I think it's more aesthetically pleasing and it's the way most of the planes parked out at the airport are done. I included a little trick for locating the holes in my post on your other thread....if you choose to go that route.

      I just finished skinning my LSA wings. For the overlaps, I wanted them such that(like a shingled roof) water would not drain into the wing while parked. Because of the expected wing dihedral, this meant that the outer skin would be on top of the next inner one. I pre drilled all my skins prior to installation. At the overlaps, I had only pre drilled the outer skin, not the one that would go underneath at the overlap. For the nose rib area, I put the inner skin in place under the existing one. Then I pushed the nose rib off to one side and match drilled the outer skin hole through the undrilled inner skin. Push the rib back into position and find the CL drawn on the rib with the skin holes and then finish drill into the nose rib.

      For the center ribs, I marked a line on the backside of the skin exactly 3" over from the pre drilled holes. That allowed me to position the CL of the rib exactly 3" over from my line so again I could drill through the existing holes in the outer skin through the inner skin and through the ribs.
