  • Left wing done (almost)

It's just shy of 2 years since I began building, and I removed the left wing out of the jig today. There are a few more things I need to do now that's it's out, but it's done for the most part.

I've fabbed most of the parts for the right wing as I worked on the left, so I hope #2 is quicker. i didn't have enough room or clecos to build them back to back.

I enjoy watching other progress, so I thought I'd share the pic.

It's pretty cool to have a wing sitting in the garage, I think i stared at it for 30 minutes sitting there on the table

Congrats! I did the same thing and the second wing does go faster. Having fabbed all the parts was great. Trying to remember how I assembled them took a few minutes sometimes. Keep upp the good work, John

Very nice. I have enjoyed watching your building her and on your builders log. You have some very nice work in that wing. Want to one over and help me rivet my wing?

Sounds like a great excuse to head out to Colorado! I was lucky to have an experienced builder help me rivet the skins......it doesn't take much of a slip to ding up those thin skins.

I appreciate all of the facebook, blog, forum posts and videos you guys make......it is an incredible resource to have.

dreamer-lurker question...I am wondering what the percentage of time is spent fabbing the parts and what is spent on assembly.

That's a tough question and I think it completely depends on your background, experience. I came into this with zero experience in welding, zero experience in aircraft building and little metal working experience, so it takes me forever (I spent 3 months building my fuel tanks). I just so happen to live near 2 guys that have built Bearhawks and are extremely generous in sharing their knowledge and time (and even material).

The wings you need to fab the ribs, spars and wing steel.....so I'd say you spend more time fabbing than assembling. I am counting on wing #2 to go much quicker then wing 1.....since most of the pondering has been done and I've got some experience under my belt. Also. check out Wayne Massey on Kitlog.....he's got a very detailed accounting of his time,

One other thing....the guys that are experienced "know" most of what's in AC43.13-2B, but if you're like me......you've got to look everything up, and it's very time consuming. I remember the first time trying to order bolts or rivets, AN this and MS that. Sheesh. It can be overwhelming starting out.
