  • Major Screwup?

I think I've screwed up the rivet holes on the rib angles/stiffener that I've done so far. I had a couple of willing helpers deburring both sides of the holes using a 100 degree single flute tool mounted in a drill press. Why I thought that was a good idea I'll never know. The result I think is that my holes (#40 drill) are out of tolerance (.103") for the 3/32" rivet. I've ordered a .103" no-go plug gage so I can check them but my eyeballs are telling me I'm going to be cutting, bending, and drilling a lot more angles. Was this the wrong deburring tool and what is recommended?
    thanks - Mike

Depending on the amount of your burr, using that tool with just your fingers, or a very light quick touch in portable drill, or have it chucked up in the drill press on low but raise the piece by hand carefully and gently to it instead of feeding it down to material. That last method of course is a bit risky.

The press was set on low and the angle raised to the bit with very little pressure very briefly. The no-go gage will be the acid test.

I use a three flute deburr bit in a hand deburr tool, done hundreds of holes this way. IMO the press is overkill and can lead to issues like this. If it were me I would toss those parts and start over. You want the holes to be of the correct size or your going to have trouble driving them.

Hi Mike, I also use a hand held debur tool...it is an avery and I would recomend it. I tried the cordless compact drill but ended up messing up a bunch of parts. All you are looking to do is knock the ridge off. A turn or two of a hand held tool or drill bit will do this, any more and your holes will open up and clecos will not hold. You can also up size them to -4 rivets if you have enough edge distance.

A bigger drill bit (2-3 times the size of the hole) in your fingers works great. Not very fast but does a great job. I would just bring them upstairs and deburr the holes while watching tv.

Thanks all for your input. I should be getting my no-go pin gage Friday and since the high temp here this weekend will be 22 I'll have lots of time to check holes and begin hand deburring. Mike

Per the no-go plug almost all the holes deburred so far are out of tolerance (> .103). I see two options: remake all the angles with oversized holes or drill the holes out to the next rivet size. I'm inclined to remake them as I can see that trying to align the bit to ensure the new hole is centered on the old could be very time consuming and errors are bound to occur in which case I'll be making a new angle. Time to note it in my lessons learned log and move on.

Mike, as long as you're not too close to the edges you should be just fine with the next size, that positioning is not that super critical.
