  • I0-360 Angle Valve/Heavy Engine

Are there any of these engines being used on a Patrol? Angle valve cylinders and counter balanced crankshaft? Would be very interested in knowing the distance from leading edge/datum to crank flange and how your W&B came out.
Was recently told that these engines are not recommended for the patrol because of their weight and the entra width interfering with the cowling.

Steve Thompson's patrol uses an angle valve IO-360. As far as I know he did nothing different on the datum. I know it's a tight fit on the cowl but it does fit.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to place the flange at 54", order the widest nose cowl I can find and cut my firewall only after I can determine that I have enough clearance. Problem is I have an old engine block for the mock up and mine is still in the shop so don't have a profile on the width of the cylinder head. I will need a recess in the firewall for the governor which isn't a problem. I will also use five points on the mount at the fuselage instead of four. Wish me luck!

I can probably get his W & B #'s from him next time I talk to him. I know his patrol is on the heavy side because he built the wings/spars more like the 4 place specs.

I'd sure be interested in his numbers and how far his crank flange is ahead of the datum. From researching the problem with the angle valve cylinders, the cowl hits parts of the cylinders as it wraps around the corners. It's the actual width of the head and not the extra overall width of the engine which I first thought. Just shy of an inch difference.
