  • Aileron rigging- heavy wing (again)

Just want to reiterate what has been discussed before

i have been flying with a slightly heavy right wing for just over a year which has been annoying and makes it challenging with a constant workload

i finally had the time over the last few weekends to peruse the forums and learn from everyone else

to correct the heavy right wing I used a single AN 970-3 washer (drilled out to9/32 and deburred ) under the lower aileron hinge where it bolts to the rear spar. And then added a single washer on the light wing between the upper aileron attach bolt and the spar

I also originally reflexed my ailerons 3/8 of an inch up with regards to the lower aileron surface and the wing tip which proved to be too much and I reduced this to 1/4 inch after the first test flight

I also rerigged my aileron cables to make sure the aileron bellcranks were as close to 90 degrees as possible and re tensioned the aileron cable to 25 lbs and the balance cable to 35 lbs

this totally transformed the flying characteristics from driving a 3 ton grain truck with manual steering and one flat front tire to that of a luxury german sedan

went for a 1 hr test flight just now and I am so much happier after spending the first 100 hrs knocking off snags I finally feel like this is the aircraft I hoped for

it is still not as fun or intuitive as my Pitts S1 but I really do not think anything could fly like that except another Pitts

so much more responsive now vs any Cessna I have ever found

just want to thank Everyone who posted their knowledge to allow me to really start to enjoy this plane

    dan

Very helpful insights as I enter that phase of my build. Two thin washers - jeez. Could you see any aileron deflection beforehand. Also what do you think the bellcrank angle beforehand - just a few degrees off? I made a big sticky in my notes to triple check the rigging. I've heard stories like this before.

Not just 2 washers, a single washer between the upper or lower hinge point and the spar
My bellcranks were probably 8-10 degrees out of square from the initial rigging

It took me two years of adjustments to get my Pitts flying the way I want and rigged properly, this was easier. I just had not taken the time until now

Now that has to be the best handle I've seen in a while !
