  • Patrol Autopilot Installation

I am wondering how to best install Garmin AP servos for pitch and roll in the Patrol. The roll servo seems to be easy enough because it fits well under the pilot's seat and can directly connect to the stick assembly. The pitch servo is a bit harder because it needs a proper mounting plate in the area of the elevator idler arm.

Has anybody already found a good solution that does not require welding? It seems quite possible when attaching to enough points with adel clamps, maybe also attaching to the stringer and to the tabs of the cargo compartment.

    Anybody has some good pointers?

I sent you a message with a link to my builders log. I did the full three axis install on my Patrol. It probably is possible to do it all with Adel clamps but I am a firm believer that mission critical items and especially primary flight controls need to be very well secured so I always weld in additional tabs. In terms of welding, adding tabs is probably the easiest weld to learn and far less demanding than cluster welding plus it's a lot of fun.

I agree with SW. Giving firm attach points gives removes one area of concern with devices that attach to flight control. I may not be a good welder on clusters but a little practice on some scrap tube I can do a good job on tabs. If not I am sure you can find another EAA builder in the area that will help you out welding a few tabs.

Thanks for the feedback. Welding it is. Just wanted to see if there was a simpler way. I recently fixed extra play in the stick by laying a bead on the inside of the bushing and drilling it out again. It worked like a charm. Only problem is once I start adding tabs, where do I stop adding tabs after crossing this rubicon
