  • First ‘whoops!’

2 weeks in and I fell into that trap of working too late and too long. I messed up and drilled out 2 holes in the wrong spot. Any suggestions? Is welding required here or am I good to just move the holes over 1/2 inch and be on my way? I clamped the mounting bracket in the wrong spot after measuring 3 times. Lesson learned.

    it’s the gascolator mounting bracket.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

The first whoops is the scariest. I have made many on my build. Once you overcome the initial panic, you just need to figure out how to do it right and vow to "measure twice and cut once." Never cover up a mistake. Take the time to inspect and correct as necessary. Good luck.

I'm not an engineer, but I don't believe those two extra holes in the bracket are a structural issue.

Hey since you've presumably got factory support for your recently purchased QB5 kit (I'm jealous!!), I'd suggest to give them a call/email and see what they say.
My thoughts (and I'm an electrical engineer, not mechanical, and also on my first build) are:
        1. That U-channel isn't primary structure. It exists to support the gascolator and transfer the associated loads to the fuselage tubing (primary structure - which is not compromised).
        2. As long as the new holes have adequate spacing from the ones already there my "gut feeling" is that it won't be an issue.
        3. Don't ever be afraid to ask!
        4. Welding holes closed carries its own set of risks. Been there, done that...

Thanks all for the advice. I managed to leave the holes where they are and I just fabricated a new mount. About 1/2” off set from the factory one. I believe it’s an easier fix than welding, etc

My first big whoops was a door sill. I had to order a new one from the factory.

Extra holes are not a big deal if you are able to offset and re-drill. It would be much more invasive to weld or replace bracket. Press on.
