  • Utah Bearhawk 5

My Bear Hawk five quick build kit is currently on production, and I am preparing my basement ? workshop. Lots of planning going on. Just built a rotisserie and wing rack, acquiring tools, and working on planning out my engine and avionics.

Congrats! What are your engine thoughts at present? Are you thinking of new, or a rebuild?

I am in that process myself. I inquired at Airworx about a 300hp IO-540, and the cores are hard to find right now. It was going to be in the $75K range. I think I have decided to bite the bullet and go with a new IO-580.

Welcome to the party. Where are you located, I’ve got a 4 in progress in Ogden if you’re ever in that neighborhood.

I’m located in Cedar city, in the southern part of the state. I’m still working out what I’m going to use for engine, propeller, and avionics. I’m leaning towards the ADEPT 360T. It’s new, so that makes me a bit nervous, but on paper it’s the perfect engine. My home airport is just under 6,000 ft, and anytime I fly east or west I’m climbing over 10,000 ft. a good reliable turbo would be nice, especially with the plane loaded down and landing in the mountains above 8,000 ft. I like the FADEC as well, and the liquid cooling. I’m not committed to it, but it sure makes sense. If that engine doesn’t work out, I think I’ll go with the Lycoming 580 as well. I’m thinking of using a Dynon panel, it seems you get more for your money than with Garmin, and can get a fully assembled and wired panel, which will save me a lot of time.

Just paid my final payment, including shipping. Should be getting going in the next couple weeks!
