  • Tools List Dumb Questions

I'm digging through Eric Newton's (excellent!) manuals and noticed that his tools list doesn't mention a lathe, though some of the wing parts feature turned components. Is a lathe required for scratch building?

Also, how far do you need to go to avoid cross contamination? I understand that you don't want to use the same abrasive discs on steel and aluminum, but do you need to go full Kosher and have separate aluminum and steel drill bits/unibits/fly cutters? Band saw blades*? Snips? Deburring tools?

(*Notwitstanding the need for different bandsaw blades with different tooth densities for the two metals anyways)

Not sure about needing a lathe.

As far as for separate tools, sanding / abrasive disk are the only thing that I would probably watch and keep separate. Everything else is fine to use on either material in my opinion.

      Max,
The only parts in the wings that "need" a lathe are a threaded insert for the brace holding the flap torque tube near the root end of the wing, and for inserts for the torque tube at the pushrod end. My advice is to make friends with a machinist locally, or buy those parts from Mark.

I use a separate bandsaw for the steel (slower running) vs aluminum, so those blades are separate. I also use separate scotchbrite wheels for the two metals (I also have one that's solely dedicated to tungsten's for my TIG). Drill bits, etc.. I use for both.
