  • Cutting ribs to length

Someone has suggested not cutting my ribs to length until assembly. Is this a reasonable recommendation or cut now and avoid primer touch-up later?

I did the math on my ribs, made tooling for each size, and cut them to size. IMO, I think you can not get as clean a cut after the fact as you can if you cut them to size in the first place.

I cut the aft end of my mid ribs 1/8" short to accommodate the rear spar cap strip which is all the same height. The forward side will be cut to length on assembly since the forward spar cap strips are different heights. I did it this way so I didn't have to worry about ending up with too many ribs too short or putting them in the wrong place. It was easier for me when I was making the ribs. I have not assembled my wing yet so I cannot say how big of a PITA it will be to trim the rib to size. 6 one way, half dozen the other...what ever is easier for you. I figured that by the time I got to the assembly phase I would have parts that needed touching up anyway.

I cut my ribs on my cnc router all to length. I have yet to assemble a wing so time will tell.

There was a post a while back about what happens if you ended up cutting a few of them too short - Bob's answer was using longer attach angles is acceptable in a few locations.
