Fairleads with Snap rings instead of Circlips

I mentioned this as an afterthought in a different post and it seemed to generate positive interest, so, for peer review.....

There were places where I foresaw difficulty installing the supplied circlip on the fairlead as the area was limited to "one hand access". In those areas, I used a snap ring as pictured as I could then use a snap ring pliers for R&R.

See any problems with this?

I do not see why that wouldn't work. I have done something similar in spots - but used the thickest safety wire wrapped around a couple times. Mark

I see no problem at all. Matter of fact, I'm going to use your idea! I plan to sleeve my rudder cables, where they pass through fairleads. That'll require me to bore the fairleads a bit oversize, which will mean they have to come out and be re-installed. Snap rings HAVE to be easier than those circlips...
Now, just one more detail: Since you've done this and know what size snap rings fit, could you share that info with us, so we don't have to fish for the right part??

Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the actual part number. I have a "Assortment kit" and just picked the one that fit.

Ah, no worries. I have a similar assortment. I doubt if there will be enough of any single size. If I remember, I'll figure it out and post it here.

I have a 3/4 x 1 fairlead from aircraft spruce, and believe this is the common one most folks are using.

I have mine out right now and measured the groove for the circular clip with my caliper. It is 11/16"

I think it's a great idea to prevent cable wear at the fairleads. How to prevent slippage?

A snug wrap of stainless tie wire, on each end, should do it.
