  • Spar web blank width

    Looking for some advise...

I cut my main and rear spar web blanks some time ago...without first checking the as-built height of my ribs. Turns out my ribs are pretty close to 0.2 inches taller that the plans call for with regard to the spar height (both the front and rear spars).

I have the aluminium on-hand to re-cut new blanks before bending...

If I bend them as they are...my math says that the flange would be ~1.14 as opposed to the requisite 1.25 call for on the plans. The rear spar flange might be about 0.9 vs 1.0....

Should I cut new ones or is a reduced width flange acceptable?!?!?!

    Thanks for any input!

I can't speak to what's acceptable, but I would recommend bending actual test strips to confirm the flange widths. Maybe it's not a problem at all!

Hi Carl, if I were you I would call Bob.

At your stage of the build, I would be careful about making concessions, especially when it would only take an hour to cut new blanks. It would probably never make a differnece, but when you're carrying your family through a mountain range and the air gets bumpy you don't want to be worrying about a structural compromise you made years ago when it would have only taken an hour to cut new blanks.

I reality though, those flanges arn't the primary load carrying structure of the spar.
      So call Bob.
