  • Steel edge distance

On the inboard aileron hinges (0.072" 4130), I have an edge distance of 1/8" from the edge on one of the 3/16" mounting bolt holes. What is acceptable edge distance for this material please? Just need to ascertain if I need to remake the part.

Never mind, chaps. I've remade the parts for peace of mind.

Out of curiosity, what type(s) of tooling did you use to cut and shape your steel before bending?

I have a small horizontal and vertical bandsaw to cut a rough outline. Then I use a carbide burr in my air die grinder to take it to the right shape before filing and sanding the edges smooth.

I think you could have welded the offending hole closed, filed it smooth and redrilled a new hole in the proper location.
