Having a flying Bearhawk has made a quantum shift in travel for us. Both our daughters live on the west coast. One in LA and the other in Portland with her husband and our two grandsons. Over the last twenty years we have made many trips either by commercial airline or driving. The drive is 1130 miles, typically takes 17 hours and we overnight around Twin Falls, ID. Last week we returned from a week in Portland, having a great time with our family. The flight is 775NM, was 6:12 in the air. One stop at Jerome, ID which is a few miles north of Twin Falls, was just about exactly half way and had the best fuel price enroute. Door to door we beat the airlines by 1 1/2 hr. Flight home was 5:50 in the air with some good tailwinds. Stopped again at Jerome and met Joe Mason from Twin Falls, who built a Patrol. He was surprised to see a Bearhawk land and came out to greet us. Always nice to meet another Bearhawk builder. At Portland we landed at Troutdale, 10 miles east of PDX. Tie downs were only $2 a night. Even though Troutdale is 80miles upriver from the mouth of the Columbia, the airport is 39'msl. Saw 30" manifold pressure on take off, flysto.com indicates power was 102%. Also showed a 300' takeoff, not bad at 2400 #s. Direct route between Jerome and Troutdale had me flying directly over Mt. Hood. I deviated about a 1/2 mile upwind both directions. Pictures of the Wasatch range at Ogden, UT, Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson and Three Sisters, and Salt Lake. My next mod is going to be an external camera mount.
