QB - Companion - The Flying Mechanic

Starting the Wings is live. I decided to start with the wings because they have a "build manual," and as my first build, I really like the feel of that structure. That being said, this was only filmed at the beginning of November and I am already to about page 19 of the build manual so I am trucking along. I think I am starting on the gear tomorrow since I am almost running out of stuff to do on them (waiting on correct inventory to arrive). Enjoying the build process so far!
 
Okay, what has everyone done for their floorboards around the control column and flap lever? It looks like a pretty good size gap and I am trying to figure out how to prevent loosing a phone, wallet, small child, etc. in the belly of the beast? Thinking about doing a sheet metal skirt with a bend similar to what the front floorboard does just shy of the pedals. Photo to show how mine is looking without the under seat panel in place.

I wouldn't want a hole that big there. Maybe you can make a patch that attaches to the floorboard with screws and nutplates?
 
I am not sharing every video I post every two weeks or so on my build but I was proud of how this one turned out. I overviewed the Aileron system and then walk through pages 15 - 18 of the build manual. This is the link here:

I made a piece with a slot and used nut plates to attach it. Sheet metal screws would have been fine. Interesting to see that the flap lever was redesigned at some point.

I believe the higher flap lever mounting location originated with the Model 5. Apparently it has been incorporated in at least some of the other Bearhawk models.
 
Long time, no write.

I have been working on the BH fairly consistently this summer with a handful of "life" delays. I do have her on the gear now and just finished my modified brake system. I used one of the reservoirs mounted directly at the top of the pilot brake valves rather than the Matco system. I also eliminated the parking brake on my build for simplicity. I am almost positive that's what caused E&P's brake lock-up on a taxiway in Louisiana a few months ago. Regardless, here is the video: Changing the Brake System on my Bearhawk Companion

I am hopeful that I can have it covered in an undisclosed fabric system (as of right now :)) by Christmas! Engine is also in hand; need to start that overhaul process and start researching Hartzel versus Catto constant speeds.

Fortunate to have a wife who knows how to sew and was willing to tackle this! We enjoyed doing it together. Now to figure out how to build or get a backseat for it. Has anyone ever actually had a backseat for one of these? If so, do you have dimensions for it?
 
I have to notice the circuitous path. A very good 4-seat design was modified to create a very good 2-seat design. Why would you want to add two more seats to the very capable 2-seater to create a very marginal 4-seater?
 
I have no interested in doing so but If I were going to add a rear seat to my Companion it would probably be some sort of lightweight, easily removable jump seat for the rare occasion that I wanted to transport a third person. In that case I would focus first on how to mount it and what sort of restraints would safely work.
