Hey guys. On the project I purchased, one of the dimples appears to have been done a little to hard and caused a small crack, which the original builder tried to drill out. Of course it is one of the top wing skins, and of course it's already mostly riveted in place, and of course this particular rivet dimple is to attach the skin to the rear spar. I would like to avoid removing the entire skin (lots of rivets to drill out), so I've been reading Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook—Airframe from the FAA website which shows methods for repair. Two methods I'm considering are adding a doubler, vs cutting out the damaged dimple and patching with a doubler. To complicate things, this dimple is also right next to a rib. I miss the days when I could email a DAR at EAA and they could tell me what they would like to see on inspection. Any advise would be appreciated.

I'm trying to save Bob from having to spend time answering general questions like this. I already have him looking a design change that the previous builder made to the fuel tank, to see if I should scrap it. I really like Bob. He's super nice, and wouldn't hesitate to help, but he can't pay the bills answering my home building questions. I still have to ask my EAA chapter, and I'll check with EAA forums once I'm cleared to post. If all of that doesn't pan out, I'll touch base with Bob. I'll also ask Bob if he decides to call me back about my fuel tank question (which I mailed so I could send pictures). Jared I forgot to tell you that the "I've got plans" t-shirt turned out great in black. I would still the hole out just large enough to eliminate the cracks, deburr it and then make a small rectangular doubler out of .025 aluminum and rivet it over the hole. I doubt anyone will ever notice it. If they do just tell them you are conducting a top secret experiment inside the wing.
