  • Major Screw-up on Control Stick

I was working away in the shop on my control stick assembly when I realized I had cut and fitted the bottom of the stick 90 degrees to where it should be. I can't believe I did it, but I did. Any suggestions? I thought about cutting it at an angle and putting in an internal sleeve, but I won't make the specs in AC 43-13B for a splice. I don't know if this really qualifies as a splice in a structural tube. I really don't want to make a new stick assembly. I'm open to ideas...

Hey, thought I would be the first one to congratulate you on your...ahh...nice welds. I am not sure if the control stick is structural, but it is flight critical. Looking at the prints and your part, I agree that you don't have room for a proper splice. I believe it was you who tried to talk me out of a splice in my flap torque rods when I was trying to save a couple bucks on shipping. Just a quick thought, when the going gets rough do you really want to sitting there and wonder if a splice in the control stick was a good idea? A couple months ago I found out that I had screwed up the rivets in the first flap spar I had completed. I really didn't want to replace most of the rivets in the first flap I built (the rivets were too short and I wasn't using the gauge correctly) but after a cold beer I ended up drilling out a bunch of rivets and pounding in new ones. Your choice... not going to tell you what to do since I think you already know. My idea is to think on it over a cold beer.

Is the top cut yet? Could you drill out your original pivot, fit a new tube inside, rosette weld the orignial pivot holes to the new tube, then drill a new pivot hole 90* ?

I'm definitely not a stranger to making a second set of parts. I have a complete set of profiled stab ribs that I made, then made a second set. That took some time for sure...
