  • Pocket Rib Attach Angle

A question for those who have been there.......... The pocket rib attach angle on the rear spar for pocket rib #3, if following Eric's build manual, interferes with the leg of the inboard aileron hinge mount. On plan #13 the distance from centerline of hinge mount to centerline of leg of hinge mount is 1 1/32". The distance of centerline to the pocket rib is 1 1/8". However, the round foot of the aileron hinge leg is 3/4" O.D. That adds 3/8" from centerline to the edge of the round foot of the aileron hinge. It appears to overlap the placement of the pocket rib attach angle by 1/4". This may be a small issue...........with moving the attach angle out 1/4" as the solution.......thus making the inboard aileron attach opening 3 1/8" rather than 2 7/8". What have other plans builders done here?
    Thanks,
    Dan

If I remember correctly, Eric suggests that you can turn the attach angle the other way, as necessary, to get the correct location. I'd have to check on that, but I seem to remember a similar issue.

Thanks, Bradrock. Yes, Eric states that as an option in the manual, however, that puts the attach angle base between the aileron hinge mount leg and the spar cap. I don't think that's a good idea. I hope folks can understand my note. I need to post a pic.........that would help.

Dan, I looked at mine and would post a pic 'cept I don't have that figured out yet. However, in Eric's manual, tab 7, page 28 of 29, top picture shows the "other way" placing of the rib attach angle. This will leave ~1/4" clearance away from the hinge foot.

Inboard aileron hinge mount. At the lower right foot of the hinge mount (see pic) there is a faint red line (on the "C" channel) indicating where pocket rib attach angle should be. This is 1 1/8" from centerline. Mounting attach angle facing either to the left or right still interferes with hinge mount foot placement. Not a big deal to move it out.......just wondering what others have done or have I measured incorrectly. It seems that "by the numbers" on the plans it places the attach angle in conflict with the hinge foot.

Ahhhh... You're confusing spars/dimensions. The 1 1/8" is for nose rib on the aileron spar. The rear spar pocket ribs will mount using the same holes that have been marked out for attaching the cap strips. Move the angle over to the holes that are at ~5 3/4" on your tape.

Yes........the 1 1/8" came from the aileron drawing itself, sheet 10. I was comparing that with sheet 2. It appeared to me the pocket ribs depicted on sheet 2 were in line with aileron nose ribs. I thought you would have equal width opening between pocket ribs for aileron hinge mount on backside of spar as you would on the opening on leading edge of aileron for attachment.
              Thanks for the help.
