  • Rear spar cap strip drilling

When I drilled my cap strips for the main spars I was advised to not drill the 3/16 inch HOLES IN THE cap strips where the aileron and flap drive tubes will mount It was recommended to drill them when fitting flap and aileron tubes at wing skeleton stage. My next question, I am about to drill the rear spar cap strips...should I leave cap stripsundrlled at flap tube, ail tube, and hinge locations at stations a, b, c, d, and e..wing rear spar, drawing 4. I believe these locations should all be left undrilled and drilled at time of final fit of hinges and flap and aileron fitting. Thanks in advance, again, gary. I will wait for a response or two before I continue

Hi Gary, I left all those holes undrilled for now. Basically, if a bolt goes in it later on, there is no need to drill it yet.

I am having deburring flashbacks thinking about spars. (I drilled mine 3/32, but in hindsight it would have been better to drill on wing assembly as the others have suggested.)

Glad I saw this, I'll be drilling my rear cap strips sometime in the next few days. Hadn't even thought about the bolt holes. Now I'm thinking I'll only drill the bottom ones.

Well, rear spar layout, drilling went great. Two rear spars ready for primer in 7 days. I will now prepare all ribs, stiffener angles, rib attach angles and all spar parts for priming. Also need to set up a spray booth in the garage. I installed the garage heating system 8 weeks ago anticipating I might need to do some priming before spring. Im glad I was thinking ahead. As you can imagine, ive been spending a LOT of time in my basement lately. Thanks all for the support so far. Gary
