  • Cable Fairleads

There are two different types of cable fairleads available from A/S. One has an ID of 1/2 inch, the other 1/4in. I have all 1/2in ID plastic fairleads. I looked at AC43-13B for any guidance as to which to use when and there wasn't anything that I could find. The rudder cables would be able to move around more with the larger ID, but does it really make any difference? I know the smaller ID requires a longer tube to put them in. The 1/4in ID fairlead fits in a chunk of tubing 3/4in long and the 1/2in ID uses a chunk 1/2in long. Thoughts?

I am planning on using the 1/4" ones on my wings, but there isn't much movement going on there since it is all in a straight line by that point. I also figured I would "shoot for the moon" so to speak in the accuracy department. Worst case senario, I grind off a quarter inch and install the 1/2" ID version if I don't want to dissemble the wing and rebuild the part if I am off a bit. I would think the smaller hole would be optimal since there would be less movement and less chance for vibration or other funky stuff to set in, but I am no engineer. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

That's kinda my original question...why the difference and is there an application guideline? I asked locally and no definitive answer...other than it doesn't matter. Ok, so why do they make two different kinds with two different IDs and use the same OD tube but the length is different by 1/4in.

I used the 1/4" ID ones figuring they would last longer wear-wise (more material). The rudder cables will rub on the edge the fairleads.

I used the 1/4" ID ones for no other reason than they raised the aileron balance cable slightly higher (1/8") to clear the flap lever a little better at the wing root. Not as much of an issue on the Patrol though...more clearance than on the 4-place. Other than that, I can see no reason why either size fairlead would not work.
