    One and a half inch nutplate spacing for fixing the wing-fuselage fairings seems too close, would 3" work?

    They are about 3" apart on my RV-8...

        I used about 6" - 8" or something, it worked out fine. These parts are not subject to any meaningful load really.

        Just be sure to have fasteners in the important spots e.g. where different fairings overlap / end.
