Flap gussets

I have a question about the triangle shaped gussets on the ends of the flaps. I have seen pics where other builders have flanged the lightening holes. My plans (#496) do not show the lightening holes as being flanged. Is it necessary? Maybe I missed an engineering change?

I believe the flanging just helps in not having a wear point (read edge) for the fabric covering.
