Can the flap nose skins be formed without an 8' brake?

  • #2
Yes. It is in sections between the hinge/attach points. However, the trailing edge piece does require an 8 ft brake. Mark

I did buy your AviPro spars which includes the trailing edges for the flaps and the ailerons. Beautiful job. However, they didn't include the flap nose skin. Looking at the plans and Eric's builders guide it shows the flap nose skin as one piece. Are you saying it can be built in sections with joints at the hinge attach points??

That dang 8' break requirement is a real pain!

We talked to a gentleman that owned a plumbing & heating business who had an 8ft brake. He let us use his 8' brake after hours so we cut & bundled all our pieces & took them to his shop. We did it all fairly quick. We made couple spare pieces for each spar. We cut up a duplicate of the wing form to give us the templates for bending the spars. The bending forms for the flaps and aileron ribs make good templates for forming the flap & aileron nose skins. Take short pieces to do trial bends for spars. The spars were close so we matched the ends that were the same size so the spar flowed seamless from one to another. There was a slight difference but by matching ends it worked out.The practice scraps give you a feel for where to set the brake for forming the long pieces. A whisker out is acceptable as long as it is very close and does not affect quality or appearance. At the end of the day it is folded sheet metal & is not CNC accurate. If someone allows you to use their brake then trial bend a long scrap piece & check it out for straightness. Large brakes can easily be adjusted to straighten.
