  • covering flaps and ailerons

Hello, started covering and want to know if I need to wait until I fit the flaps and ailerons to the wing before I cover them? Quick build wings...

    Thanks,
    Greg

You want to wait....well I am speaking from the Patrol Point of view, and am unsure if the Four place is different. But, anyway, I studied this a few months ago using Mark Goldberg Builders Manual.

I think your Flap and Ailerons have gussets gussets that were pop-rivets in place from the factory. When it comes time to install the control surfaces, the pop-rivets get drilled out, and gussets removed, so that you can clamp the L-shaped Hinge Brackets to the control surfaces spar. You will then align the control surfaces up, drill the hinges, then permanently rivet the guest back in place.

Check out pg.24 on the Bearhawk Builders Assistance Manual (pdf file) on Bearhawkaircraft.com, then Resources, then Kit Builder Manual, p.24

100% agree. I would get them attached to the wing first. You have to access the inside to install nutplates or bolts (depending on how you build them).

I didn't put any access rings on them, to allow inspection holes to be fitted later. I didn't want 10 access rings on my wings, mostly for aesthetic reasons.
I figured if I need to open the control surfaces up, something has gone wrong.
