    To expand on Marks statement.
Yes it should pass under the panel.
Also trim the stick short enough so a gloved thumb can rest on the top of the stick and clear under the panel as well as when deflected towards the engine controls.

look carefully at the plans and note the angular position
of the bellcrank where the elevator cables join and the pushrod goes to the stick. It is important that all the geometry be oriented as shown otherwise you will create a condition where you have non symmetrical elevator action and the cable tension either increases or goes slack as the stick is moved fore and aft.

The stick assy positioning is also critical as the push rod between the bellcrank and stick could go over center and lock in the full stick forward position…………

I have the wood grips and with the grip pushed down against the curve in the stick it still hits the panel. Has anyone cut the stick off below the curve then spliced it back together?

I ran into that with wooden grips once but was able to get enough clearance by relieving the corner on the base of the grip right where it interfered with the stick bend. You might see of that will get you enough room. Otherwise you could splice where you are talking about, and there is good guidance in 43.13 on how to do that properly.

Yes, like Mark stated the stick will go under the instrument panel. I didn't want to cut to much of my stick when I put my grip on so I cut the panel up close to the bottom cross bar the panel mounts to and wide enough for left and right movement.
