  • Source for new mufflers

Anyone have a source for new mufflers? I can't make the exhaust off the Cessna XP fit under the BH cowl on the recommendation of a reputable aircraft exhaust shop I'm going to modify it which will require new mufflers. I've only checked a couple places but they won't sell parts, just complete systems. I need something that is similar to what vetterman puts on the 3into1 exhausts.

    Thanks

How about Clint B ? He probably has access to some that are remarkably similar to what you're imagining. It may be that he doesn't sell parts?

I had Experimental Aircraft Exhaust build our exhaust system. We mocked it up with PVC & they built in with 321SS. I would think it reasonable that you could mock up the configuration for the section that you want & they could build it. We got the muffler dimensions then put cardboard discs cut to the muffler diameter on the PVC mock up to get the muffler fit and clearances. The muffler location was marked on the PVC mock up with masking tape. You could do a rough sketch with your skills and get a guesstimate of what it would cost to build the exhaust that you are looking for. This is the company that I am recommending. http://www.experimentalexhaust.com/

There is another company that does a similar mock up and construction for experimental aircraft but I have no knowledge of their service or craftsmanship.
Discover premium aircraft exhaust and engine mounts at Aircraft Exhaust Corp. 100% quality guarantee, dedicated to innovation and customer satisfaction.

Aircraftexhaust.net has some parts as well as Burns Stainless Steel @ http://www.burnsstainless.com/. I would not recommend that route unless you have a skilled welder qualified in TIG. One of my build partners is a certified welder & we bought a Lincoln 225 Precision TIG for the project. Bob has welded miles of SS process piping in his lifetime. He could have welded up an exhaust system but it is a headache to weld 321SS. We have a friend with an exhaust that he has repaired occasionally and he really is not happy doing it. I think to do a good job welding 321SS it requires the tube to be filled with argon to get a trouble free weld. It has been a while since I have had my head in the welding game but I believe the 321SS requires the Argon backing gas. I have been involveds in code piping and pressure vessels design, construction, specifying weld processes, weld tests & inspections, welder testing, QA/QC and overseeing pressure & chemical code welding for a couple decades. I was impressed with quality of the work on our exhaust.

You could ask Clint at Vetterman the same question with a sketch. If the system is simple then perhaps you could mock it up and send it to Clint for construction. I have talked to him a few years ago and he seemed like a really good fellow as well. More quotes and conversations may get you the system you want and help get the lowest cost. Cliff at Experimental Exhaust or Clint at Vetterman will give you a first grade product.

Thanks Jared, I’ll check with Clint.

Glenn, EAE was my first call because of your previous recommendation. They don’t have your mock-up anymore but they remembered your setup after my describing it. Quoted me $2k USD to make it. I made a few more calls and decided to go with modifying my XP exhaust. I have a local certified welded that makes custom headers that will help me with the job or I can just send it to Acorn and let them take care of it.

If you are just adding some tube and mufflers then it should not be too difficult. Our exhaust was a total redo and fancier than the original. Surprised that the price jumped that much but time marches on and costs escalate. You can do a PVC mock up with pcs from Home Depot or Lowes to develop your layouts. Cheap and simple. I have a 40 Ford that will eventually need an exhaust and had this link saved that may be of use to you, Maybe consider a ball joint after your connection to allow some flex so that it is not entirely rigid as everything really shakes on the Lord mounts when the engine is revved out. This is a jig for accurately cutting bends to the angles needed and clean angles for connecting the butt welds. It would be good if you could tack it together really well & then take it out for weld up. It should work fine.

              Hi Jon.

I did not see your PM until just now. I replied to your message with an exhaust that may work or may be modified to work with your engine mount.
