  • 51% Rule on Bearhawk 5

I am fully new to all of this.

I have been watching the osborn videos. Very informative.

I notice a descent amount of tasks and I think “it would be nice get help or pay someone to do that.”

    examples of possible taks:
    seat cushions
    covering
    painting

I am not saying I would farm that out but maybe…

I know there is a 51% rule- but how does one ensure they dont violate?

I may have found my answer.

next question though is how do you apply the 51% rule to the kit? Does bearhawk give you a prefilled out checklist of what they have done and what is left to do?

It's not as simple a question as you might think. This FAA Circular (https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/.../AC_20-27G.pdf) has a a decent summary of the important points. It's important to note that the Major Portion Rule relates to "fabrication and assembly tasks" not hours.

Our kits come in about 41%-42% on the form the FAA uses to calculate "tasks". Not even close to the 49% allowed. Mark

Thanks, Mark. Does that list of the 40-42% come with the kit. Again- totally new to this stuff.

Source: FAA advisory Circular in Post #3 is your guide. It says you must do the majority of the work that is on their checklist. The guide tells us that 100% of the work not on the list can be hired out, and that some of those items not listed include avionics, upholstery and paint. SO you cover the project then farm out the coating process and not take any hit on the 51% rule.

Sport Aircraft Seats is the way to go on seats
Covering is not that hard (I did Oratex). Fuselage is easy besides 4 points which I am happy to help with if using Oratex
I would not want to paint
