  • Aileron Covering Question

I will be starting the aileron covering today. I have a question regarding the hinge bracket area.

When cutting and gluing the fabric, should I try to avoid fabric over the mounting holes for the hinge brackets. or is it acceptable to have fabric between the aileron and the hinge when you re-attach it? It seems like there is no way not to have it over the screw holes.

Used Oratex and temporarily fitted the hinges the ran a sharp blade around the outline and removed the fabric with a chisel. Only took a few minutes.

I specifically avoided putting fabric under the hinge brackets.

I really like that solution. Thanks.

I covered over the hinge bracket mounts and finished through to prime (Stewarts) Then I used a punch to find the holes and melted the openings for the hinge bracket mounting bolts with a hot steel rod. I did it this way because I thought it would hide the fabric seams from view and airflow better. It’s probably a non-issue, but it made it easy to observe fabric overlap requirements.

Just go over the hole. Then use a soldering iron to recreate the hole and flatten the area around the hole. Worked well with Stewarts covering.
