  • Rib Layout on Aluminum Sheet

When laying out your ribs on aluminum sheet stock, does the chord line align parallel to the aluminum grain or perpendicular?

I've heard Bob say something along the lines of that for his designs, he has not counted on a specific grain direction for strength. I'm paraphrasing.

In school we always considered the grain a factor in layout.

Perpendicular preferred to prevent cracking at edge flanges. Mark, I'd recommend the four Tony Bingelis book series available from EAA for ~$100. Money well invested.

Can't go perpendicular with spars unless I'm missing something.

Those of you who have the Tony Bingelis books, can you tell me the difference between Sportplane Builder Aircraft Construction (blue book) and Sportplane Construction Techniques (yellow book)? The description on the EAA website is nearly identical for both books. He also has 2 engine related books out. Just wondering how they differ. Thanks!
