Welcome to the group, you will find there is a wealth of information available here. I'm out in Goodyear building the 4-place A Model.

A Five will definitely carry a bit more than a Sportsman!

It is interesting that the gross weight is only 500lbs more than the Sportsman, but translates all to increased useful load. 1400lbs versus 850 in the Sportsman.

In both cases, the useful load will depend on how you build it. However, there is a big difference between carrying a load with 180 hp and carrying with with 260-300 hp. One will fly if there is enough runway to get it going. The other will climb with confidence even with adverse conditions. I've been into Johnson Creek once for a few days. On the day we were leaving there was a guy with a 180 hp C-172 also planning to leave. He was worrying about climb performance even after offloading some of his gear on his friends. We had no concerns at all.
