Hello. I'm hoping you all can give a little guidance. I'm at that point where I would like to purchase a bush plane but deciding which one is frustrating. First, a little history. I've been a pilot for over 30 years with an instrument rating and taildragger endorsement (owned a Cessna 140 for a while). We fly (spouse is a pilot too) approximately 200 hrs a year in our Bonanza A36 to and from our home in Sacramento to our businesses in Idaho and Central California. Due to the ever increasing amount of time in Idaho, we bought a place in Cascade, Idaho. We are fortunate that the place has its own grass airstrip and we are able to land the bonanza with no problem. We have also taken the A36 to the usual haunts including Johnson Creek, Smiley Creek, Schafer Meadows, Garden Valley etc.
The problem is that we are really hankering to get into the remote backcountry stuff where the strips start looking more like 1000-1500 feet. We also want to be able to take the dog or maybe throw a buck in the back. So, when you start talking dogs and dead animals, the SuperCub starts looking less and less desirable and Maules and 180's look more desirable.
In my research so far, the bearhawk is looking like a good option.
Anybody have any input? Anybody in the area of Cascade, Idaho or Sacramento where I might check one out?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Hey Mike, Welcome to the group.

Sounds like you have a pretty sweet set up! All that's missing is the bush plane.

Are you looking to buy a working plane, or looking for a reasonably big project? It sounds like you might be a busy sort of guy between your businesses and travels.

Welcome! There's a lot of folks on here with good info. A kit would be quicker than a scratch build though I'm not sure if that would still take up too much time.

Waitaminute... I think I know that handle! Are you a podcaster and writer by chance?

Thanks fellas..... frankly, I'm just trying to settle on a make and model. I'd love to do the supercub type plane but I really need the room for our crap. I'm not liking the Cessna 180 type as I'd like to be able to get in some tighter areas than those can handle. Maules seem ok but I like the looks of the 4 place bearhawk. I'd probably be purchasing a working plane. Man, I wish I had the time and expertise to put one together myselt but unless you can put em together with 16d nails, it aint gonna happen. I'm not the "finish work" type of guy. I envy some of the guys on our field with these perfect RV's they've built.
We really only have one business..... veterinary. A couple of practices is all... just in different states. No, I'm not the podcaster or writer. You can probably tell that by my lousy syntax.
I looked at the map of all the builds and finished planes... I'm hoping a couple of folks will chime in for a possible ride.

Bearhawks come up for sale every now and then. There is a scratch built with a 6 cylinder Continental on Barnstormers now.

Welcome, Mike. I don't have anything to show you except a set of 4-place plans and a shop in disarray, but I live right up the road in McCall. You're more than welcome to have a closer look at the BH measurements, etc. There is a 4-place Bearhawk for sale in Grangeville, it's a little rough (and priced accordingly). PM me, if you are interested.

                This is your plane Mike:
Aircraft for sale. Find the best new and used aircraft for sale such as business jets, helicopters, Experimental, Warbirds and more.

It has extensively upgraded landing gear and a big enough engine to handle the type of flying that you are talking about. The Bearhawk community is small, and you might have trouble finding a better match. Contact the owner in the listing (Ernie) and have him tell you about the time he flew it from his home in Florida to the western back country with the two front seats full and the rest of the cargo area loaded from floor to ceiling. Ernie's career was as a fabricator doing highly specialized welding work for the Department of Defense. I've spent time talking with him on several occasions, and Mike Swain lives across town from him. The paint style is unique, but if it doesn't meet your tastes, for the price he is asking, you can repaint it and still have one heck of a deal. I don't think he'd mind me telling you that he is reluctantly selling for medical-related reasons for himself and his family.
