  • Need to hang wings?

    Okay, my disclaimer is something like this "there is no stupid questions..."

    On my Q/B kit, the wings, struts and fuselage attach points have all been final drilled/fittted. Other than making any fairings between the fusealge and wing roots, is there any compelling reason to hang the wings prior to prep and paint and final assembly? Curious as to whether I may be on the right track or way off track

    There are stupid questions, but this isn't one! Some of the things that I did with the wings on before covering: making fuel lines, making flap cables and associated systems, routing wires for wing things (no big deal on that one, because I had connectors at the wing root). There are several different ways to run the fuel lines down the door posts, but many people wrap them in covering material. If you go that route, you would probably want to build them with the wings on first. You can't really get the flap torque tube drilled without the wings in place but you also can't install the tube unless the wings are off.       Quite a few things to do. You need to create your wing tank fittings and plumbing and see how they line up to your mating fuselage plumbing. You need to create rigging for your flaps and check this against the movement of your flap handle. The fittings for where the flap cable in the fuselage attaches to the wing control arm is a tight fit. Lastly you need to create an extension to your flaps after they are hung on the wings and mounted on the fuselage to bridge the gap to the fuselage. This will be a custom aluminum or fiberglass creation. This gap seal could be part of your top wing closeout as several builders have done or as a separate piece that gets riveted to the inboard portion of the flap. You may consider this all final assembly work but most of these tasks are quite a bit easier to accomplish before the fuselage is covered and you have really good access to everything. The fact that your wings are pre-drilled is a really big time saver as this was a major task for earlier builders.
